2023 Enid Mark Lecture in Contemporary Poetry and Book Arts, "At the Intersection of Content, Process & Magic: The Artist’s Book Experience." In this presentation, Julie Chen will discuss her recent work and give some behind the scenes peeks at how her artist’s books get designed and produced. The artist’s book is a versatile art form that allows for the creation of a wide variety of immersive experiences. Reading is generally a solitary activity, so all elements contained in an artist’s book must be easily accessible to the reader and, in the case of books with unusual structures, come with clear instructions on how to work them. Makers of artist’s books must often juggle many roles: designer, engineer, printer, binder and of course, artist. Neilson Library Browsing Room - Smith College or Zoom with registration
